Muddy Creek was the early name for the school located a short distance west of the Muddy Creek Bridge in Mt. Clinton. This two-room school is indicated as School # 2 and #3 in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The exact date of construction of this school in unknown but it is believed to be the early 1870s. This school was incorporated into the Mt. Clinton Graded School in 1890 and was later known as the West Central Academy. Teachers known to have taught at this early school are:
