The Mount Vernon school in Central District was located southeast of Harrisonburg on what is now Smithland Road between the road to Keezletown and the Old Furnace Road. The date of construction of Mt. Vernon is unknown but it is indicated and named in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The date of the closing of Mt. Vernon is unknown but it probably closed in 1910. Teachers known to have taught at Mt. Vernon are:
