The Mount Vernon School (Stonewall) was located on the Brown's Gap
Road about three miles southeast of Port Republic. The land for the
school was deeded to the Stonewall District School Board by Sara Sipe
and others on November 10, 1883 and the school was opened for the
1883-84 school session. The original school was replaced by a new
building in 1928 built by Eutsler Brothers of Grottoes for $1550. The
Mt. Vernon School was closed after the 1944-45 school session.
