Mt. Pleasant School (Stonewall)

The Mt. Pleasant school in Stonewall District was located east of Elkton and north of Swift Run next to Mt. Pleasant Church. The date of construction of the early school is unknown but it is indicated and named in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. This first school was a one-room frame building. In 1898, population growth justified the construction of a double (two-room) school. On September 26, 1898, land for the new school was deeded to the Stonewall District school trustees by N. C. Naylor and A. F. Lamb and the new double school was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1898. In 1912, this school burned and was replaced by a one-room school. In 1922, an additional room was added and Mt. Pleasant continued as a two-teacher school until 1948 when it was again reduced to a one-teacher school. Mt. Pleasant School was closed in 1954.
