Mt. Crawford Colored School

The black population of Rockingham County was scattered in small settlements throughout the county. This made it very difficult to maintain a legal average number of pupils necessary to continue operation. For this reason, many of the black (colored) schools closed and the children were sent to the Effinger Street School in Harrisonburg. The Mt. Crawford Colored School was a one-room school built in 1885 in the town of Mt. Crawford. By the turn of the century, the black population had diminished to the point that the students were transported to the colored school at Bridgewater. The building and lot at the Mt. Crawford was sold in 1904. No additional records can be found concerning the school and its teachers.
