Mountain Valley School
The Mountain Valley School was built in 1881 on land donated to the Linville District School Board by E. M. Bowman. The school, identified as Linville District School #20, was located about three miles north of Singers Glen on the west side of what was then known as the Mountain Valley Road (currently Route 613). The school is shown on Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The school was a one room frame building that served an average of about 30 students. Little information is available about this school except that in 1902-03 and possibly 1903-04 Evie Walters, who lived near Linville Depot, was the teacher. In addition to the children of E. M. Bowman other family names represented at the school were Hollar, Berry, Reedy, Bible, Landis and Moyer. The Mountain Valley school was closed when the Brock's Creek school opened in 1908. The children to the south and west of the school went to Brock's Creek, the children to the north went to the Oak Hill school and children to the east went to the Hollar school.
