Mt. Crawford School

Mt. Crawford was one of the early graded schools in Rockingham County. The original building was constructed in the early 1870s and was a two-room school located near the center of Mt. Crawford on the Valley Pike. From 1877-79, H. Sheffey Roller was listed as Principal at Mt. Crawford and the school was reported to have two teachers and 78 pupils. By 1883, the school had grown to three teachers and 140 pupils. In 1883 a new four-room frame building was constructed on a lot south of the German Reformed Church on the west side of the Valley Pike. The school is shown in the Mt. Crawford map in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. This building served the community until 1918 when land was purchased a short distance north of the original school and a four-room brick school was built. The school was built by Harrisonburg builder J. Holmes Moore at a cost of about $12,000. The building was ready for occupancy by Christmas of 1918 even though it was not completely finished. The new school at Mt. Crawford continued to serve the community until 1956, when the school was closed and the students transported to Bridgewater. Superintendent's State Reports for Graded Schools provide an interesting picture of the growth and development of the Mt. Crawford School
