The Montezuma school was located at Montezuma, a few miles west of Dayton in Ashby District. The first school at Montezuma was a one-room school constructed in 1878. The school is indicated in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. Land for the school was not deeded to the Ashby District school trustees until February 20, 1884 when land was deeded from Robert Skinner and others. It was about this time that an additional room was added to the end of the one-room school. The earliest teachers at Montezuma are unknown. By 1909, patrons became concerned about the condition of their school and began to petition the school trustees for a new, more modern school. Numerous meetings were held until June 6, 1910 when the school trustees agreed to build a two-room school. On July 20, 1910, land for the new school was deeded to the Ashby school trustees by John H. Glick, Construction was begun immediately and the school was ready for occupancy early in 1911. Patrons continued pressing for a third room for the school and finally by 1912, the school trustees agreed if patrons would pay part of the cost and furnish labor and materials for the additional room. The third room was ready for occupancy by the fall of 1912. The Montezuma school continued to serve the community until 1945 when it was closed. Declining school population caused the reduction of one teacher and from 1932 on the school was a two-teacher school. Teachers known to have taught at Montezuma are:
