Middletown School

Very little is known about this school, which was also known as the Bluff School because of its location on the bluff overlooking the North Fork of the Shenandoah River between Broadway and Timberville. The school is shown as School #15 in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The name MIddletown apparently came from its location midway between Broadway and Timberville. The school was probably opened about 1880 and was still in operation in 1903. A diary entry of Austin Garber, recorded in Beverly Garber's book, Timberville, the Early Years notes that "I was at spelling match at Bluff Schoolhouse. Viola Spitzer is the teacher." The diary entry was dated January 16, 1903. The school is not listed in minutes of the Plains District School Board in 1908 so, presumably, the school was closed sometime between 1903 and 1908. Other teachers who taught at Middletown are: (dates uncertain unless noted)
