The Menonite (Pike) School was one of the earliest schools in Rockingham County, predating the public schools. The school was built about 1845 and was one of several schools built on church property and, presumably, operated by the church during its early years. Other schools operated by churches included Beaver Creek, St. Michaels, and Friedens. The school was situated on the lot of Pike Mennonite Church on the Valley Pike midway between Mt. Crawford and Harrisonburg. The school was "owned by the neighborhood" and was incorporated into the public schools when the Rockingham County School system was organized in 1872. The school was "used by the district in consideration of repairs". Teachers at the Menonite School are unknown and the exact date of closing is also unknown but the school is believed to have closed between 1900 and 1910. The school is shown but not specifically identified in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County.
