Melborne School

Little is known about this early school except that it was listed as Ashby District school #27 in the 1886 building survey of Ashby District. The school was located on the road from Mays Mill to Mt. Crawford (currently Route 727) and was about one mile west of Mt. Crawford. The Melborne School was a one room school built in 1876. The school is indicated on Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County but not specifically identified. The closing date of the school is unknown but notes included on the building survey indicate that the lot was sold on May 4, 1912 to O. B. Pifer for $22.50. The only known teacher at Melborne was Mary D. Woodward, who taught at Melborne during the 1909-10 school session.
