Mechanicsville School

The Mechanicsville school was located in a small settlement northwest of Timberville. The exact date of construction of the first one-room school is unknown but it is listed as School#22 in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The earliest teachers at Mechanicsville are unknown. By 1909 the school population had grown to a point where it was necessary to build a new school to replace the original Mechanicsville building and to absorb part of the neighboring Locust Grove school. Two acres of land for the new school were deeded to the Plains District School Board by B. W. Knupp and Joseph Orebaugh and wife on October 6, 1909. There was some contention about the new school as the residents of the Locust Grove area did not want to lose their school and even went to court to seek an injunction against the construction of the Mechanicsville school. The court sided with the School Board and by the fall of 1911 a new two-room Mechanicsville school was opened. The school had two teachers until 1932 when it was reduced to a one-teacher school. The Mechanicsville School was closed in 1937. Teachers known to have taught at Mechanicsville are:
