McGaheysville Colored School

The McGaheysville Colored School was located on the Rockingham Turnpike (currently Old Route 33) about one mile east of McGaheysville. The land for the school was deeded to the Stonewall District School Board by J. R. Dutrow and wife on December 30, 1884. The original one-room building was used until 1922 when the patrons of the school requested a new building. Land for the new building was deeded to the Stonewall District School Board in August of 1922 by C. R. McGahey and others and a new school was built by L. A. Hensley at a cost of $1300. The McGaheysville Colored School was closed in 1943 and the students were transported to Lucy Simms School in Harrisonburg.
