The community between Broadway and Mauzy in Plains District now known as Mayland was known as New Town prior to 1900. This was the site of one of the early graded schools in Rockingham County. In 1881, the Plains District school trustees authorized the construction of a new two room school building at New Town to replace an earlier one-room school known as the Zigler school. The building was finished in time to hold its first session during the 1881-82 school year. In its first session it had two teachers and 70 students. This was located a short distance south of the Broadway-Mauzy Road (now Route 259) on the east side of Phillip's Store Road (Route 619). By the turn of the century the old school needed to be enlarged or replaced and a new school (now called Mayland) was constructed a short distance north of the intersection with the Broadway-Mauzy Road. The new school was a three-room school and it opened during the 1905-06 school session. This school served the community until 1939 when it was closed and the students transported to Broadway.
