The Landes (Hall) School was located on the Swift Run Gap Road between Harrisonburg and Dayton (now Mosby Road). Little information is available about this school except that it probably started out as a private (subscription) school and was incorporated into the public school system in 1872. The school was located near the east corner of the Hall farm. The school burned in the fall of 1874. The school was not replaced at that location but was replaced by the Mt. Carmel School which was located about five-eights or a mile southwest on the opposite side of the road. (closer to Dayton) The Mt. Carmel School was built on property deeded to the Ashby District School Board by Noah Wenger. The Hall, Landes and Wenger properties are noted in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County and the Mt. Carmel School location is also noted.
