Lacey Spring School

Lacey Spring has always been one of the educational centers in Rockingham County and was one of the first schools in the county to offer instruction in the "higher branches" (high school and college preparatory education). John W. Taylor came to Lacey Spring in 1865 and started a school in a small building at the northern edge of Lacey Spring. This school was later incorporated into the Rockingham County Public School system. In addition to the high school and college preparatory instruction, Professor Taylor's school provided summer "normals" for teachers to upgrade their professional skills. In 1884, a four-room frame building was constructed on a hill above the spring and this school served the community until 1919, when it was replaced by a new four room school on the south end of town. On July 17, 1917 land for this new school was deeded to the Linville District school trustees by F. E. Wood and wife and the new school was opened in January of 1919. The original school had been in Plains District and the new school was located across the district line in Linville District. During the term of 1921-22 and 1922-23 a Junior High school was added to the Lacey Spring school. A teacher was added to the faculty to teach the high school subjects. This teacher was also the principal of the school. In 1934 Forest Grove school was closed and the students transported to Lacey Spring and in 1939 the Melrose school was closed and these students were also transported to Lacey Spring. The Lacey Spring school continued to serve the community until 1953 when it was closed and the students sent to Linville-Edom and Broadway.

In 1987, the Rockingham County School Board, in order to relieve crowded conditions at Plains Elementary School and Linville-Edom Elementary School chose a site at Lacey Spring for a new school. In September, 1989, a new Lacey Spring Elementary School opened its doors and became the fourth public school to serve the Lacey Spring community.
