The Humes Run school was located northwest of Elkton on the road (Route 602) leading from the Rockingham Turnpike (Route 33) to Shenandoah. The original building at Humes Run was constructed in 1880 on land deeded to the Stonewall District School Board by L. B. Dovel and others on August 9, 1880. The original building was a one-room frame structure. In 1914, a second room was added to the school by building a second story to the school. Access to the second story room came through an enclosed exterior staircase. By 1929, the Humes Run school was in need of replacement so a new building was constructed by L. A. Hensley at a cost 0f $3200. The Humes Run school was closed in 1957 in anticipation of the opening of the new Elkton High School in February of 1958.
