East Point School

The East Point School was located on the road from McGaheysville to Shenandoah (Route 602) about two miles west of Elkton. It was located opposite the East Point U. B. Church on the west side of the road. East Point was one of the oldest schools in eastern Rockingham, being constructed by the community in 1871. It was also one of the few rural schools to offer an advanced program of instruction (high school). The old building served the community for nearly 70 years, closing in 1939. As early as 1914, there were proposals to replace the old building with a new structure but the new construction never took place and the old building served until it was closed.
