Dry River (Central) Coopers

The Dry River school in the western part of Central District only operated for two years. W. Thomas Wolfrey operated this small school during the 1914-15 school session. and A. Hortense Sutton operated the school during the 1915-16 session. The school was also known as Cooper's School. The school was located in a remote section at the foot of Shenandoah Mountain a few miles west of Rawley Springs. There were not enough families in the area to maintain a school so the only option for the families after the school was closed was to go to the Tollgate school at Rawley Springs or perhaps to the Dry River school located in Ashby District. Rockingham County also offered summer programs for the children in the more remote areas of Rockingham County. A teacher was hired in the summer months to go the the homes and offer a basic educational program for these children.
