Clover Hill School (Academy)

The first school at Clover Hill was a one-room frame building constructed on land deeded to the Ashby District school trustees by G. S. Heatwole and wife on February 7, 1880. This buiding, according to early records, was opened in 1882. By 1892, there was a need for a larger building and land for the new larger school was deeded to the Ashby District trustees by James M. Richard and wife on October 18, 1892. The new building was a two room school with one room on the lower floor and one room on the upper floor. The old one-room building was moved from its original location and attached to the two-room building, making a three-room school. This early school, known as Clover Hill Academy because it offered higher level instruction (high school and college preparatory work), was well-known throughout the area and served to prepare teachers after the closing of West Central Academy in Mt. Clinton. One of the early leaders at Clover Hill was Malcolm G. (M. G.) Lilly, who served at Clover Hill during the first decade of the twentieth century and returned to the school as principal at a later date. The only known teacher at the one-room school was A. B. Funk, who taught at Clover Hill in 1890-91. The principal at the two room school from 1892 through 1895 (and perhaps, later) was J. T. Heatwole. By 1915, the old school needed replacement and, with much community labor and support, the new brick four-room school was opened after Christmas break of the 1915-16 school year. This school would serve the community until the school was consolidated into the new Ottobine elementary school which opened in 1958. The school continued to offer one year of high school instruction until 1941. A new lunchroom was built at Clover Hill in 1945 at a cost $1750. For its last year, 1957-58, the seventh grade and its teacher, Clayton Towers, were moved to Dayton.
