Carpenter School

The Carpenter school was located east of Lacey Spring on Smith Creek. It was located a short distance west of the Mountain Valley Road. The school is noted but not named in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. Land for the Carpenter school was deeded to the Linville District School Board by Robert A. Harrison and wife on November 15, 1882. A one-room frame school house was built and began operation in the fall of 1885. The teachers at the Carpenter School are unknown and the closing date of the school is also unknown. The school probably closed about 1906 when the Mt. Tom school on the Mountain Valley Road was moved to a nearby location.
