The date of construction of the Ash Shade School is unknown, but
the school is listed in the Plains District School Board minutes in
1881 as school #12. The school was located on the old Timberville-New
Market Road on the north side of the North Fork of the Shenandoah
River. The Ash Shade School was directly across the river from Plains
Mill. The building was in operation until 1904. The last two teachers
at Ash Shade were:
1902-03 E. Lizzie Trussell
1903-04 Mary Rothgeb
After the school was closed the lot and building were sold and the
building was moved to another location to be used as a farm
building.
