Kinderegarten Math Teaching Strategies

Kindergarten Overview

Be sure your classroom has a math area with manipulatives readily accessible, labelled, and organized.

You will have a specified math time in your schedule, but math is integrated into everything else you do---such as daily routine, lunch count, calendar, attendance, language arts block, science, and even art.

Math reviews can happen anywhere--lining up to go to lunch, waiting at the bathrooms, etc.

Math is reinforced through fingerplays, songs, chants, exercise time.

Kindergarten Essential Diet

It is important to realize that math is naturally and easily integrated in all aspects of the Kindergarten day. The following items, however, are recommended for a well-balanced math diet.

Daily Calendar Time--this may be the most important math time of the day!

Designated math instructional time to introduce, practice, and review concepts.

model, give guided practice, and allow for independent practice

Manipulatives are a must for hands-on teaching and learning.

Review concepts frequently--this can be done during math lessons, but easily accomplished during transition times, while waiting in line or lining-up.

Math Their Way activities are extremely valuable and should be used at least once a week (other than the daily calendar time).
