Calculus Overview |

Text: Calculus of a Single Variable by Houghton Mifflin There are three calculus courses offered in Rockingham County Public Schools: Calculus, Dual Enrollment Calculus, and AP Calculus. All are intended for students who have a thorough knowledge of analytic geometry and elementary functions in addition to college preparatory algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. All cover essentially the same objectives which are listed below, though the AP Calculus course covers them in more depth. The topics covered in the Calculus course include most of those covered in a first year college calculus course: limits, differentiation, and integration of functions with applications. The topics covered in the Dual Enrollment Calculus class are consistent with the expectations of calculus as taught in the Virginia Community College system. The purpose of the AP Calculus course is to prepare the student for advanced placement in college calculus. These standards incorporate the College Board Advanced Placement Course Description Syllabus. Students in this course are strongly encouraged, though not required, to take the AP exam. Graphing calculators are heavily used in this course. Computers are used where feasible by the student and by the teacher. Any technology that will enhance student learning should be used if available. Instructional activities that engage students in solving application problems of varying complexities are encouraged. |
