Comprehensive Plan 2011-2017

RCPS Technology Plan 2010-15

TECH PLAN TOP TEN

  1. The need to retrofit ALL classrooms in RCPS to the level of our newest schools.  Each classroom needs a ceiling mounted projector, interactive whiteboard, document camera, DVD/VHS player, etc.  We have made good progress toward this goal but need to keep it in the forefront.
  2. The need for more bandwidth to all elementary schools.  Currently middle schools are on a 10 MBPS link and high schools are on a 100 MBPS link but many elementary schools are still on a 1.5 MBPS connection.
  3. The need for incorporating more handheld devices (iPods, iPads, etc.) into instruction.  We believe that there are many great Apps appropriate for use in improving instruction in RCPS for handhelds like these.  In addition, once textbooks are available in e-book format we foresee students bringing home all of their textbooks on a handheld device.
  4. The need for expanding wireless access in RCPS.  Wireless access is currently available in some locations in all buildings but, especially with the addition of handheld devices, it needs to be available in all locations in all buildings.
  5. The need for additional tech support for our teachers, administrators, and students.
  6. The importance of using technology to improve instruction.  The implications of this need are that training opportunities must abound in RCPS so our teachers will be highly skilled at integrating technology into instruction.
  7. The importance of maintaining up-to-date technology.  All users, from kindergarten students to principals, deserve to use equipment which is not outdated.
  8. The need to continue to expand communication among all stakeholders including employees, parents, students, and the community. For example, within the past two years parents of students in grades 3-12 have been enabled through PowerSchool to view student grades and attendance.
  9. The importance of continuing the many services RCPS technology already provides to employees, parents, and students.  That is, our technology plan must not only include the addition of new roles for technology but also the continuation of those services already provided. The list of these services is numerous and includes a comprehensive e-mail/communication system for employees, a powerful student information system, safe and highspeed internet access for all users, robust division and school websites, file storage for all users with backup services, online testing, online course management, instructional software, maintenance/coordination of databases such as transportation, food service, and libraries, emergency notification services, and many, many more.
  10. The need for additional funding for technology.  All of the above items come with a cost.  Technology in RCPS, counting all funds spent on hardware, software, telecommunications, services, and personnel, still accounts for less than 2% of the RCPS annual budget.
