School Policies and Procedures

Expected Student Conduct

The following rules have been made for the protection of each child at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. The staff at PVES strive to provide an atmosphere where each student can learn to his or her full potential without distraction. It is recognized that students need freedom to grow. However, students must realize that freedom involves the rights of others. Deliberate student misconduct cannot be tolerated. The staff at PVES will make every effort to see that the rules listed below are followed:

  1. Students are expected to exercise COURTESTY, show respect for others, and care for personal and public property at all times.
  2. Students are expected to WALK in all areas of the school.
  3. Dress should be appropriate and in good taste. For safety reasons, clogs and flip-flop shoes are not permitted.
  4. Students are not allowed to wear any hats inside the school.
  5. Toys, Gameboys, walkmans, cell phones, radios should be left at home.
  6. Pagers, beepers, cell phones, and other communication devices should be left at home.
  7. Chewing gum is inappropriate during the school day.
  8. Students shall not use or be in the possession of alcohol, tobacco, or any harmful drug.
  9. All fireworks, ammunition, explosives, incendiary devices, and weapons are forbidden on school grounds, in the school building, or school vehicles, or in connection with any school related events.

Arrival and Dismissal

The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m. Walkers and children brought by their parents should not arrive at the cafeteria until 8:00 a.m. Students may then go to their classrooms at 8:15. Any child arriving later than 8:30 a.m. is considered tardy and must stop by the office for a tardy slip.

Fifth grade students will be dismissed at 3:03 and the rest of the students will be dismissed at 3:07. We ask that parents not pick up their children until 3:07 p.m. except for an emergency or an appointment. Parents must sign the child out in the office and pick up a purple pass to pick up their children in the cafeteria.

Absences

Good attendance is necessary for a child to benefit from the school program and all efforts should be made to keep the child in school. Sick children should not be sent to school until they have recovered. If a child is absent:

  1. Please notify the school office by phone (434-4557) before 9:30 a.m.
  2. Send a note with the child when they return to school briefly explaining the absence. The telephone call and the note are both required

Attendance awards will be given at the end of the year for those children with perfect attendance. Children who miss no more than 3 days will recieve Excellent Attendance Awards. Three tardies shall be equivalent to one school day absence in considering perfect attendance.

Early Release

If a child will be leaving school during the day, definite procedures are followed to assure their safety.

  1. Written parental permission should be sent to the teacher stating the requested time of release.
  2. The parent (or named adult in the note) should COME TO THE OFFICE AND SIGN THE CHILD OUT and get a "Purple Pupil Pickup Pass." This pass is then given to your child's teacher. ALL children must be signed out in the office.
  3. If any person other than the parent or guardian is to pick up the child, the school should have a statement from the parent specifying the necessary information

Change of Address/Telephone Number

If you have a change of address or telephone number during the school year, please notify your child's teacher or the office in writing so that we can keep our records up to date. Thanks.

Moving? Transferring Students?

Parents should notify the office when they are planning to move to another school attendance area. Cumulative records will not be sent with the pupil or parents to the next school. The receiving school will request the records after the child has been registered there. Your child's records are available to you for review at any time.

Accidents

Parents are strongly encouraged to take out accident insurance if no other coverage is available. Children who are injured at school will have their parents notified. Minor injuries will be handled by the nurse

Fire Drills

Monthly fire drills are required by law and are an important safety precaution. It is essential that when the first signal is given, everyone obeys orders promptly and clears the building by the fastest route outside. Students should stand in a straight line without talking during fire drills.

Dress and Grooming

We support the right of the parent to exercise their responsibility in determining proper dress for their child. Causal dress is accepted attire; however, extremes should be avoided. Students should be neat and clean, and dress should reflect accepted standards. Rockingham County Dress Code regulations specifically state that clothes promoting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, violence, or sexually explicit messages are prohibited. Tank tops, midriff blouses, mesh shirts, pants worn below the waists, flip flops, or hats are inappropriate clothing. The complete regulations are listed in the Rockingham County Public Schools Parent-Student Handbook. Shoes should be worn at all times. All clothing should be labeled or marked with the pupil's name.

Lost and Found

Each year a considerable quantity of unclaimed clothing and articles of various and sundry description accumulates in the lost and found box. After a reasonable period of time, the articles not claimed will be discarded. If your child has lost any item, please encourage him/her to check with the office immediately. If the lost item has been found and turned into the office, it will be returned to its righful owner.

To assist us in returning lost articles, all items such as books, purses, clothing, lunch boxes, and equipment SHOULD BE PLAINLY MARKED WITH THE CHILD'S NAME. This will be most helpful to us in identifying and finding the proper owner. Parents of kindergarten, first, and second grade students ARE URGED to put IDENTIFICATION on boots, coats, and lunch boxes.

School Pictures

Pleasant Valley Elementary School offers two school picture programs. In the fall, parents and students may select from five different picture packages. The student pays for his/her pictures on the day the pictures are taken. If a student or the parents are dissatisfied for any reason, he/she may have his/her picture retaken or the pre-payment refunded. In the spring, another individual picture program is offered. This picture is a more casual pose and proofs are sent home for parents to examine. Class pictures are taken in the spring as well.

Yearbook

A yearbook containing the school picture of each child and a pictorial record of the activities of that school year will be available to anyone wishing to purchase one. Yearbook sales will be conducted in the fall and continued during the school year, and will be distributed on a "Yearbook Signing Day" in the spring.
