The Four Components of School Guidance Counseling

1. COUNSELING

*individual students - to help them express concerns and problems, to better understand themselves and others, and to work toward positive education/personal/social development.

*developmental groups - to help children learn from each other and share common concerns. Growth groups explore: feelings, attitudes, decision making, interrelationships, etc.

An example would be "new student groups" which help new students make new friends and adjust to their new school.

*issue-centered groups - to deal with concerns that may be interfering with learning, such as: disruptive classroom behavior, inadequate social skills, underachievement, personal/social issues.

2. CONSULTING with

*teachers - to evaluate behaviors and individual needs of students, to assist in enhancing the total development of children, to provide suggestions for behavior management, and to offer inservice workshops. *parents - to promote effective parenting skills, to help with problems that may be occurring at home, and to follow up on concerns and progress of the child. *specialists - to work appropriately to promote maximum development of the child's educational potential.

*administrators - to provide the most effective learning atmosphere schools can offer.

*special services staff - to better serve students with special needs.

*community agencies - to make appropriate arrangements for referrals and follow-up services.

4. CLASSROOM GUIDANCE
