English Language Learners (ELL)

Mrs. Clatterbuck and Miss Long

English Language Learning (ELL) Program at Pleasant Valley Elementary School consisits of one full-time ELL teacher and one ELL tutor who provide direct assistance to Limited English Proficient (LEP) student

LEP students are identified through a process that begins at their registration to our school where a home language survey is completed. This process continues with a placement test (W-APT) to determine their level of English language acquistion. Students are also given another evaluation (WIDA) each April.

When it is determined a student needs ELL services, they can become part of a pull-out program through which English is taught in a small group setting with other students who have a comparable level of Engligh. When deemed appropriate, the ELL tutor "pushes into" classrooms and provides assistance in content area instruction to strengthen the ELL student's program and progress.

Parents of ELL students are not just invited but encourages to particiapte in meetings open to all parents, such as PTA meetings, Title I events, and Art/Book fairs.

The ELL program goals are that each LEP student will acquire skills necessary to:
  • become fully proficient in English by understanding, speaking, reading, and writing English in order to function in American society, while maintaining regard for their own cultural heritage and native language.
  • function at or near grade level in mainstreamed classes.
  • pass the state Standards of Learning assessments and the federal government's No Child Left Behind requirements.
  • become responsible members of American society and serve as productive participants in the classroom and community.

Interpreting and translating services are available for parent communication.
