Happy February Everyone!!!!
Where is the snow???? We really could use just a small snowstorm!! The cold would kill off a lot of the nasty viruses and bugs that are following our kids around.
Parents, don't be afraid but head lice is around. It has been seen sporadically in school this year. I do go into classrooms and do spot checks just to make sure we are clear but you can help me by checking your child at home. In an effort to keep them out of our classrooms, I have asked if the kids can put their coats in their backpacks and not hang them in their cubbies. Also please reinforce that we should not share hats, scarves, coats or clothes with hoods.
Myths about head lice:
1. They spread disease. They don't. They are annoying but not harmful.
2. You can get them from pets. No, you can't. They actually like people!
3. Having lice means you are dirty. Nope! Head lice prefer clean hair.
4. Lice jump and fly. They don't. They crawl off one head on to clothes and then on to another head.
What to do if your child has them?
1. Shampoo- Nix, rid and lice MD are widely available. Repeat treatment in 7- 10 days.
2. Pick nits. After shampooing, you literally need to sit and "nitpick". It can take hours! Lice combs can miss a lot. I think using your fingernails works the best.
3. Repeat # 2 every 2-3 days for several weeks. If you leave behind one nit, it can hatch a single louse, which can lay eggs and the whole cycle begins again.
4. Clean up. Wash clothes, bed linens etc. in hot water. Vacuum couches, mattresses, floors. Anything that cannot be washed (stuffed animals) should be sealed inside an airtight plastic bag for 2 weeks. Soak all combs and brushes in rubbing alcohol or medicated shampoo for an hour or longer.
5. You may return to school after being treated by a medicated shampoo.
Please if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
