TLC Remedial Program

The Learning Connection

The Plains Elementary School staff is involved in a concentrated effort to provide services and alternative learning experiences to students who, in the teacher’s judgment, will qualify and profit from additional assistance in the SOL areas of language development, reading, writing, math, history or science.  Major emphasis will be focused on nurturing success in classrooms and developing positive self-concepts and good attitudes toward school.  TLC services are available to any K-5 student who is not making sufficient progress as documented on Standards of Learning, national norm-referenced, and/or other local assessments.

TLC students can be scheduled with a TLC teacher or trained assistant on a short-term, specific needs basis.  The TLC effort extends beyond specialists/aides to all staff, volunteers, tutors, mentors, Cornerstone computer lab, literacy assistants, etc.  Interested parents are encouraged to contact the TLC Coordinator at Plains Elementary School. TLC teachers are specialty teachers trained in the area of reading.

The TLC staff often works in the classroom side-by-side with the classroom teacher to help children with their reading, spelling, writing, math, history, or science assignments.  Occasionally, children will be “pulled-out” into another classroom or area so that they may work individually or in small groups on particular skills.
