WSPMS 8th Grader, Andrew Logsdon, Wins Regional Spelling Bee
Rockingham County Public School students, Andrew Logsdon and Mary Louise Johnston, took the top two positions at the Regional Spelling Bee held on March 7.
Andrew Logsdon, an eighth grader at Wilbur Pence Middle School, won the bee. He will receive a lap top computer, dictionary, $100 saving bond, one-year subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online, and a plaque. He will participate in the National Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May. The Daily News-Record will provide Andrew and one of his parents an all-expense paid trip to D.C. Andrew was the second place finisher in the county bee held on Feb. 12. He is the son of Ken and Ann Logsdon of Harrisonburg.
Mary Louise Johnston, an eighth grader at J. Frank Hillyard Middle, took second place. Should Andrew not be able to go the national bee, Mary Louise, as alternate, will participate. She won a dictionary, subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online, $20 certificate to Amazon and a plaque. She is the daughter of Kevin and Kristiann Johnston of Broadway.
All the participants at the bee received a T-shirt and a backpack filled with little prizes and gift certificates. The Rockingham Educational Foundation, Inc. sponsored the T-shirts for the RCPS students.
Rockingham County Schools had nine students in this bee. There were a total of 23 students from Rockingham County, Harrisonburg City, Shenandoah County, Highland County, Eastern Mennonite Middle School, other church schools and home schooled situations.
The spelling bee coordinators are Stacie Holzberger, teacher at Wilbur Pence Middle, and Christopher Clymer-Kurtz and Kina Eaton, both teachers at J. Frank Hillyard Middle. For information, contact Janet Wendelken, spelling bee coordinator for RCPS, at 564-3218.
