| Joe Showker Earns Award for Helping Keep Kids Safe on the Web | ||
| WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Friday,
Congressman Bob Goodlatte presented Montevideo Middle School
Instructional Technology Resource Teacher Joe Showker with a Children's
Champion Award for his work with the Web Wise Kids (WWK) program
throughout Virginia. Web Wise Kids is a non-profit organization
that works with community partners including teachers, law enforcement
and community youth leaders to teach and develop strategies for safe
Internet use and the detection and deterrence of online
predators. Showker is a member of WWK's advisory board and
has been instrumental in expanding the scope of the organization by
teaching thousands of parents, teachers and children in the
Commonwealth about safe Internet use. "Joe Showker is an excellent teacher and his enthusiasm and energy for his work are admirable. Joe's work with the Web Wise Kids educational program is a shining example of his dedication to education and protecting our children from online predators. Being aware of the dangers of the Internet and talking to children about those dangers is the best way to prevent online predators from exploiting them. Joe continues to engage parents, teachers and children throughout the Commonwealth and with every presentation he is helping to protect more and more children," said Rep. Bob Goodlatte. WWK is actively participating in Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales last May. Project Safe Childhood is a nationwide initiative aimed at preventing the abuse and exploitation of kids through the Internet. WWK continues to work with the Office of Justice Programs to provide extensive online educational resources for teachers, parents and children about the dangers of the Internet and how to protect young Internet users. "Joe Showker is arming Virginia children and teens and those who care for them with the knowledge and tools needed to better detect and deter online solicitation. I applaud his efforts and look forward to continuing to work with him to make sure children can safely access the Internet," said Rep. Goodlatte. ![]() Rep.
