EES Students Read Over 750,000 Pages in 2 Weeks to Earn Celebration
Elkton Elementary School Bookaroos decided to "Saddle Up and Read" during February to celebrate Reading month. Principal Ed Powell challenged the students to read 250,000 pages to earn a Reading Rodeo celebration in the gym complete with horse bingo, a stick horse relay, a wagon ride relay, and finishing with the ever popular tricycle relay. The students accepted the challenge and read more than 750,000 pages during the 2 week period.
To prepare the students for a visit from John Erickson, author of the Hank the Cowdog series, the school divided all students into five teams represented by the characters in the "Hank" series with the winning team earning a wagon ride around the school. "We had a great time and students showed us they were the best readers in the west," praised Sally Brown, EES Reading teacher.
