McGaheysville 5th Grader Wins Regional Math Competition

JeffBailey

McGaheysville Elementary School student Jeff Bailey beat out over 100 competitors from elementary schools in Rockingham County, Augusta County, and Harrisonburg City to claim the Regional 24 championship on March 31 at Wilson Middle School in Fishersville.

The 24 Game is a math activity in which students are presented cards with four numbers on them.  Students must use all four numbers in a sequence which yields an answer of 24.  For example, in the picture above with Jeff, 5 - 3 = 2, 4 + 8 = 12, and 2 x 12 = 24.  Can you find a different combination to get to 24?

In the Regional Competition, students compete against three other students in a group.  The highest scoring 16 individuals from these initial group competitions make it to the semifinals.  The highest scoring 4 students from the semifinals compete in the finals.  Jeff defeated his rivals at all levels to claim the championship.  He won a trophy, calculator, champion's shirt, and a 24 game autographed by the original author of the game.
