RBES 5th Grader Wins Essay Contest
Leslie displays her winning essay and check, flanked by her teacher, Cindi Zodda (left) and mother, Tammy Wood (right), RBES's school nurse.River Bend Elementary School 5th grader Leslie Wood won the top prize in the Americanism Essay Contest sponsored by the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge #450 with her essay titled "The American Dream." A reception for students with the top essays in the contest was held on March 28 at the Elks Lodge where Leslie learned she had been selected as the first place winner in the 4th-5th Grade division. She walked away with the winner's check of $100 and her essay moves along to the next level of competition.
Wayne Orebaugh, chairman of the Americanism Committee at Elks Lodge #450, said the goal of the competition is to "promote interest in patriotic ideas among young people."
Leslie is the daughter of Tim and Tammy Wood of Elkton.
