JFHMS Ag and YES Students Visit MTC

Submitted by Marianne LaRocco, MTC Assistant Director for Marketing and Programs

Our welders become teachers! Last week, our Welding class, as well as our Masonry and Veterinary Assistant classes, had visitors from Mr. Don Rhodes’ Ag class and Mr. Wayne Arbogast’s YES students. The Massanutten Technical Center students helped the eighth graders from J. Frank Hillyard Middle School with their competencies in Welding, Animal Science, and Concrete work.

Our students showed Mr. Rhodes’ 8th graders how to strike an arc – safely, through the use of proper techniques. In Masonry, students were shown how to mix mortar and properly build a brick wall. In Vet Assistant, the J. Frank Hillyard students learned to administer an injection to an animal and do routine grooming for animals such as nail clipping and bathing. These are all skills they will need as they further their studies in Agricultural Education.

This was a great collaborative effort between schools as the 8th grade students were able to work on their competencies and our MTC students could apply and develop their workplace readiness skills as well as enhance SOL attainment through public speaking. Our students were responsible for all of the presentations and the teaching of the skills.

We are proud of our state-of-the-art labs at Massanutten Technical Center and always enjoy the opportunity to share them with other schools and their students. This collaboration allowed these middle school students to learn, with an almost one-on-one “teacher” to student ratio, and
our students loved being the teachers!
