More than 300 people heard great news about this year’s United Way Campaign and came prepared to work at area agencies at the United Way’s Community Campaign Wrap-up and Day of Caring event on May 18.

The United Way announced that $1.1 million has been raised for the 2010-11 fundraising campaign. Dr. Carol S. Fenn, RCPS division superintendent, co-chaired the campaign with Thomas Rea of United Bank this year. Thirty-two non-profit agencies will receive funds through this effort. The funds raised this year matched the amount raised in the 2009-10 campaign.

Dr. Fenn was recognized for her role in the organization and her leadership of the campaign. She has served for the past two years as the co-chairperson for United Way.

The employees of the Rockingham County Public Schools contributed $39,083.19 to the campaign. That is an increase over the RCPS campaign 2009-10. “RCPS is pleased to support the United Way,” said Janet Wendelken, United Way coordinator for RCPS. “Our campaign was again successful due to the leadership of Dr. Fenn and the time and effort of the UW coordinators at each school. They were great.”

MillerCoors, WHSV-TV3, Shickel Corp. Cargill Dayton – Dayton, BB&T, Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Tenneco, and First Step. Diane Yerian of Eastern Mennonite University received the campaign volunteer of the year award.

Following the recognitions, teams of workers were organized to work the Day of Caring part of the United Way’s event, going to and helping at the agencies.

The UW Day of Caring RCPS team was Dr. David Wenger and Amy Reubke, both from Fulks Run Elementary, Linda Driver, Linville-Edom Elementary, Hilary Bierly, South River Elementary, and Brandy Strickler, Spotswood High.

“I am happy to report that United Way Day of Caring by Rockingham County Public Schools was a great success,” said Strickler, a member of the UW volunteer council. Strickler teaches business and information technology at SHS. “We spent the day at the Collins Center vacuuming, washing windows, organizing, moving items and overall cleaning of the office space.  We even had the opportunity to learn a little more about the great things that happen at the Collins Center.

“Special thanks for the DOC team for their hard work and to all involved,” said Strickler.
