GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Provides assistance to RCPS mathematics teachers, K-12 with primary emphasis in grades 6-12. Assists the Director of Math and Technology in the implementation of the Rockingham County Mathematics Curriculum.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

• Provides support to teachers, grades K-12, in the teaching of mathematics;
• Provides assistance to all mathematics teachers about the content and methodology for teaching the mathematics objectives found in the Virginia Standards of Learning;
• Visits classrooms and engages teachers in conversations about teaching techniques, methods, and materials; however, does not participate as an evaluator in the teacher evaluation process;
• Provides demonstration classroom teaching to students as requested by teachers and/or administrators;
• Provides inservice training to teachers, K-12, including providing programs to large groups of teachers on inservice days, school faculty meetings, or individuals assistance, as requested;
• Assists in providing resources to teachers including calculators, manipulatives, web-based support documents, etc.;
• Helps develop math curriculum materials and assessments;
• Works with teachers to develop math curriculum and objectives with sequential articulation across the grade levels;
• Assists with the selection of textbooks and materials for the mathematics and instructional computer programs;
• Provides leadership to teachers and administrators in promoting quality instruction in mathematics and instructional computer education;
• Cooperates with staff members and administration in promoting a positive organizational climate;
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
• Maintains licensure at the state and/or national level; assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date;
• Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
• Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
• Performs related duties as assigned by Director of Math and Technology in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Candidate must possess demonstrated ability and professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, teachers, administrators, students, and parents is an essential component of this position. The candidate must possess the ability to teach mathematics effectively and share this knowledge with peers. The ability to use various technologies in the teaching of mathematics is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and hold a Teaching License with an endorsement in mathematics. Successful experience in public education as a mathematics teacher in grades 6-12 is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, staff members, administrators, and community members. Candidate must possess good moral character.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: offices, computer labs, and classrooms. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Other physical activities may be required. Frequent operation of a vehicle, office equipment, and computers is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. The ability to work effectively and regularly with a computer (keyboard, monitor) is mandatory. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with staff members and parents is required. Frequent contact with vendors and parents by phone and in person is necessary. Occasional contact with technology or medical professionals may be required.

EVALUATION

The Director of Math and Technology will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
