GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Instructs and plans the instrumental music program
during the ten-month contract period. Performs complex professional work
providing teaching and/or training services to students motivates students to
develop skills; performs related work as required. Works with general
supervision. See Teacher, Job Description, Specification Handbook of Rockingham
County Public Schools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
The minimum performance expectations include, but are
not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
á Meets
and instructs the students(s) in assigned locations and at the designated
times;
á Instructs
and plans the instrumental music program during the ten-month contract period;
á Ensures
the adequate supervision of students;
á Establishes
and maintains rapport with students;
á Motivates
students to achieve maximum potential;
á Takes
all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,
materials, and facilities;
á Works
collaboratively with staff, families, and community resources to support the
success of a diverse student population;
á Complies
with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
á Models
non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
á Performs
related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the
school/system policies and practices;
á Adheres
to all of the duties listed on the Teacher, Job Description, Specification
Handbook of Rockingham County Public Schools;
á Implements
the following extra-curricular and summer band activities:

Description for Extra-Curricular Compensation
Annually, prior to beginning of school, provides the
principal with a written ÒAnnual Plan of Band Activities.Ó The principal will review and approve
the ÒAnnual Plan of Band Activities, making additions or deletions based on the
needs of the school. This plan may
be adjusted during the school year with the principalÕs approval due to
changing opportunities and circumstances.
The ÒAnnual Plan of Band ActivitiesÓ is expected to
include preparation for and participation in:
á Marching
band program development including field shows at all home football games,
competitions, and parades
á All
city–county band
á VBODA
state festival
á District
festival
á Graduation
ceremonies
á A
minimum of three concerts
á A
minimum of two parades
á A
minimum of one fall marching competition
The ÒAnnual Plan of Band Activities: may include:
á Additional
school concerts
á Additional
community concerts
á Additional
parades
á Additional
marching competitions
á Band
trips
á Performances
and/or support for school events or community groups such as:
o School
musical
o School
showcase
o Jazz
band
o Ensembles
and other special groups
o Drumlines

á Performs
related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the
school/system policies and practices;
85 Hours
of Summer Band Activities:
á Keeps
accurate records of student contact hours, compensation is based on the time
sheet that is to be submitted on the last day of each month to the Central
Office Summer School designee;
o Student
contact hours include the following: band camp, small group or special
instruction, or band instruction (beginning, intermediate or advanced).
á Submits
a time log to the building administrator at end of each summer month, including
each studentÕs name and the date and time of the band activity;
o Up
to 15 hours of the 85 hours may be used for summer lesson preparation.
á Submits
a complete schedule of all summer activities to the building administrator at
least one day prior to start of each summer session.
á Performs
related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the
school/system policies and practices;
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of musical instruments and band
director practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and
methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules,
regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of
behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students,
parents and community members.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college
or university and possess or be eligible to acquire appropriate license(s)
and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia
and School Board.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must possess good moral character.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
Duties performed typically in school settings to
include: band room, classrooms, gym, auditorium, and recreational areas, both
at home and away events. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to
approximately 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment such band
equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited
physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field
trips and various performances may be necessary. Vocal communication is
required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;
hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels;
visual acuity is required, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work,
and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to
inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Occasional
movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be
required. Regular instruction to special needs students may be necessary.
Regular contact with students to provide a positive learning environment is
required. Contact with administrators, staff members, parents, and community
members is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is
necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.
EVALUATION
Performance will be evaluated on the ability and
effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities by building
administrator(s).
