GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Works with school personnel and local reading improvement subgrant personnel in a liaison role to promote family literacy in the school and community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

• Works collaboratively with school administrators, consultants, and central office personnel in promoting family literacy;
• Assists teachers in planning, organizing, and carrying out parental involvement activities at the school, including providing refreshments and making child care arrangements for meetings, as necessary;
• Coordinates opportunities for family literacy activities with WVPT’s Ready to Learn Program, and Massanutten Regional Library;
• Encourages family participation in the school’s literacy activities (parent volunteers in the classroom and/or on field trips, classroom visitation, and attendance at meetings/workshops, etc.);
• Works with the school librarian and computer lab assistant to provide opportunities for increasing family literacy;
• Assists school staff in organizing and implementing family literacy events;
• Makes personal contacts with families (home visits, phone contacts, newsletters) to promote parental involvement;
• Coordinates services offered by community agencies to promote family literacy and adult education (G.E.D.);
• Advertises family literacy events through public service announcements in media and on community bulletin boards;
• Serves as a member of the Title I School Planning/Local Reading Improvement Subgrant Steering Committee;
• Evaluates the effectiveness of family literacy services in the school and community;
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
• Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information, while maintaining the safety and welfare of all students and staff members;
• Assumes responsibility for professional development and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date;
• Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
• Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
• Performs related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor(s) in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Candidate must possess the ability to work cooperatively with others in a positive manner; ability to learn and use specialized instructional/management techniques, as needed; ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with staff, parents, and students; ability to use technology.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and possess a Bachelor’s Degree; a related field is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidate must possess good moral character.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classrooms; gymnasium, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with staff members, administrators, and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents and community representatives by phone and in person is necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.

EVALUATION

Supervisor of Remedial Education will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
