JOB TITLE:    ESL Interpreter/Translator

 

LOCATION:    Various Schools Within Division

PAY SCALE:          Hourly Wages

 

FLSA STATUS:     Non-Exempt

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Interprets languages (between English and other language(s)) at the request of the building principal, and with the approval of the Director of Grants & Special Projects, in order to promote meaningful communication between home and school.  Occasional requests may be made of interpreters with demonstrated skills in written language to translate forms and other types of written communication.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

¨    Abides by the Interpreters’ Code of Ethics;

¨    Participates in RCPS – sponsored Interpreter training sessions;

¨    Maintains and respects confidentiality of all involved in the interpreter conference;

¨    Holds a brief pre-session with conference participants in order to explain procedures and the Code of Ethics;

¨    Acts as a conduit – not changing, deleting or adding anything;

¨    May clarify the message with permission (cultural and educational language);

¨    Assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps skills up-to-date;

¨    Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;

¨    Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;

¨    Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Grants & Special Projects and/or the building administrator(s) in accordance with school/division policies and practices.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Candidate must demonstrate proficient oral and written language skills in their target language; possess the ability to work cooperatively with others in a positive manner; possess the ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, administrators, teachers, and staff.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school or General Education Development Certificate (GED).  College work is preferred; however, not required.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classrooms and other school facilities.  Limited physical activities may be required.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to noise and hazards. Occasional attendance to building-level meetings and division wide meetings and ESL training activities may be necessary.  Regular contact with other staff members and administrators is required. Contact with parents and medical professional may be required. 

 

 

 

EVALUATION

The Director of Grants & Special Projects with collaboration from the building administrator(s) and the classroom and/or ESL teacher (as appropriate), will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
