Directs
and supervises the secondary education program and provides coordination of
activities at the secondary level. The Director provides instructional support,
staff development, curriculum development, administration and other tasks
assigned by the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL
TASKS
The
minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following
actions:
¬ Assists with matters related
to instruction, personnel, athletics and administration at the secondary level;
¬ Provides direction and
assistance to principals with a focus on school achievement and school educational
goals;
¬ Assists
in the development and implementation of the divisionÕs curricular and
instructional goals;
¬ Provides leadership for the
assessment of current instructional practices and curriculum and makes
recommendations for improvement in secondary educational programs;
¬ Supervises the development
and/or revision of curriculum at the secondary level;
¬ Demonstrates dedication to
studentsÕ needs in discussions, decisions, and processes;
¬ Mediates
and resolves conflicts resulting from student/teacher/parent/community appeals
and concerns;
¬ Assists
in the screening and interviewing of applicants for prospective teaching
vacancies and administrative vacancies in the schools as requested;
¬ Assists
principals with the observation and the evaluation of staff;
¬ Assists
principals with the development and implementation of Intensive Assistance
Plans;
¬ Works
collaboratively with teachers to implement instructional best practices and
improve effectiveness in the school system;
¬ Attends
School Board meetings and prepares such reports, as requested by the Assistant
Superintendent;
¬ Attends
SuperintendentÕs Executive Committee meetings and communicates information to
secondary principals;
¬ Serves
as Central Office contact person for secondary principals and coordinates monthly
meetings for principals;
¬ Leads
the divisionÕs athletic programming and participation in VHSL and works
collaboratively with Activities Directors to ensure schools maintain compliance
with VHSL policies and practices;
¬ Coordinates
division level expectations for all high school principals to expect of their
Activities Directors and of each other as a team;
¬ Meets
with Activities Directors and secondary principals to address issues while
promoting a division focus;
¬ Demonstrates
support for administrators, faculty, staff and students by conducting periodic
school visits and attending extracurricular events
¬ Develops
budget requests in areas of responsibility within the framework of the
Rockingham County Public Schools budget directives;
¬ Stays
informed of current educational trends and programs for division schools;
¬ Takes all necessary and
reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and
facilities;
¬ Maintains
licensure at the state and/or national level; assumes responsibility for
professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date;
¬ Models
non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
¬ Complies with and supports
school and division regulations and policies;
¬ Performs related duties as
assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Administration in accordance with
the school/system policies and practices.
Candidate
must possess demonstrated ability and professional and personal characteristics
necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the
community. The ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written
reports, free from edit; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with staff, students, building administrators, and members of the
community is required.
Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or
university and hold a Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in
Supervision/Administration or similar leadership licensure/certification.
Evidence of successful experience in public education as
a school administrator is preferred.
Candidate must possess personal skills reflecting
flexibility, cooperation, and concern for the human element of education. Must
be able to provide own transportation to school-related functions and schools
throughout the division. Frequent operation of office equipment is required. Candidate
must possess good moral character.
Duties
performed typically in school settings throughout the division and Central
Office. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30
pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to
approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are
required. Travel to schools
throughout the division and Central Office is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by
means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal
spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing
written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work,
and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to
inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Regular
contact with staff members and school administration is required.
The
Assistant Superintendent for Administration will evaluate performance on the
ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
